No Limited District!
Would you pay twice for your car?
Would you pay twice for your children's education?
Then why would you pay twice for services that the City of Austin is required to provide?
This is what will happen if we do not stop the AMMUD Boards current proposal to create a Limited District for 10 years after annexation occurs. After paying your City of Austin (CoA) taxes, you will be required to pay anywhere from $0.10 to $0.50 per $100 of your home's value to fund a Limited District that will be made up of three of the then current AMMUD Board Directors. At this time the AMMUD Board will not commit to a firm taxation rate. Even if they would, as a Limited District they will retain the right to raise the tax rate up to the full $0.50 per $100 at their discretion!
Contrary to what the AMMUD Board has been telling us,the City of Austin has confirmed that our parks and pools will continue to be maintained and available at the same levels they currently are,for a period of 10 years. This is required by State Law - it's not an option. There is no need to pay twice for this.
The AMMUD Board is also using Deed Restriction enforcement to frighten us into paying this double taxation. While it is true the City of Austin will not enforce our existing Deed Restrictions,City Ordinances and the Building Permitting system more than adequately address these concerns. A list of these Ordinances can be found on our Deed Restrictions page.
The AMMUD website provides a cost comparison with and without a Limited District. They propose that by using Limited District tax dollars to pay for solid waste services you as a tax payer will save hundreds of dollars and get a tax write off. At this time the AMMUD Board is paying an additional $3.00 per house, per month over what appears on your monthly utility bills to the company that provides our solid waste services. Where is the money coming from for this supplemental payment? Per the AMMUD Board, profits the MUD makes from utility payments. The AMMUD Board is hiding the true cost of this service. Further, the current contract for this service expires December 31,2008 and at this time the MUD General Manager has been unsuccessful in obtaining bids for the upcoming year. There is no GUARANTEE that our solid waste costs won't rise dramatically. The AMMUD Board is finding out it is not financially cost effective for a solid waste service provider to service our neighborhood. The Tanglewood neighborhood has had a Limited District for more than 10 years and determined that they were unable to secure solid waste services at a reasonable cost and now receive their services through the City of Austin.
There really is no reason for a Limited District in Anderson Mill. Our parks and pools will be maintained and serviced by a city that has been nationally recognized 3 times out of the last 5 years for their parks. Cost effective solid waste services and better recycling services would be available.
Many residents bring up the higher City of Austin pool tag costs and that a Limited District would keep pool tags lower. Those lower costs are the result of our higher property taxes.
